These US digital shelf trends are about to hit Europe. Here's how CPGs should prepare

A map of Europe with the letter AI on it.

The retail trends that take off in the US typically reach European markets 18 to 24 months later, giving CPG teams across Europe a preview of what's to come. That delay comes down to regulation, as the EU AI Act and GDPR set stricter conditions on how marketplaces deploy AI and handle shopper data.

In the US, Amazon has Alexa for Shopping and Walmart has Sparky, while European marketplaces have yet to roll out a shopping agent at that scale. But that absence hasn't stopped European shoppers from using AI along their shopping journey. They're already asking LLMs like ChatGPT and Gemini what to buy, and discovering products through generated recommendations.

Therefore, treating AI-driven discovery as a 2027 problem is a missed opportunity to get ahead of this shift in how consumers shop. Brands that take notes from the US playbook early will be better positioned as native AI shopping agents roll out across European marketplaces.

Which US retail trends are coming to Europe next and when?

A graphic comparing the US and Europe in AI commerce milestones.

AI search through LLMs is already reshaping how European shoppers discover products. This has already begun to change how brands earn visibility and drive conversion across Europe. Brands that continue relying on the same optimisation strategies they used years ago risk losing traffic as shoppers increasingly turn to AI recommendations instead of conducting their own searches.

1. AI is already gatekeeping what European shoppers see

European shoppers are increasingly asking LLMs what to buy. AI search accounted for 4% of organic visits in Europe during early 2024 and rose to 8% by 2025; it's now projected to reach 25% by the end of 2026. The brands that appear in those AI-generated responses are the ones with GEO-friendly content.

US brands have already rewired their PDP strategy around question-answering content to stay visible, and European brands are facing the same pressure.

2. European retail media is maturing faster than brands expect

As marketplaces expand their retail media networks in Europe, success will increasingly depend on earning organic visibility through AI-friendly content while using retail media strategically to amplify it.

US brands have already seen what happens when retail media investment outpaces execution on the digital shelf. Amazon's ad revenue grew 24% year over year in Q1 2026, reflecting continued growth in retail media investment as brands compete for visibility. Many brands have gone wrong by increasing their ad budgets to send shoppers to product pages that weren't ready to convert.

European marketplaces are following the same trajectory, with retail media prominently discussed at ShopTalk Europe in June. As retail media investment grows, European brands have an opportunity to avoid the mistakes US brands have already made.

3. Conversational commerce will reach Europe within a few years

Conversational commerce is still a few years away from reaching Europe, as payment integration, retailer adoption, and Europe's regulatory environment make AI-driven transactions slower to roll out. Meanwhile, the US has already provided a preview of which version of conversational commerce works.

In March, OpenAI discontinued its Instant Checkout feature, since shoppers were reluctant to complete transactions inside LLMs. Now, marketplaces are integrating their own shopping agent, like Walmart's Sparky with ChatGPT, so shoppers can discover products conversationally before seamlessly completing a purchase through the marketplace.

How European brands should prepare for AI in retail now

The throughline across all of these trends is product content. Brands that learn from the markets ahead of them and ensure their catalogs are optimised now will be better positioned to defend their future visibility.

1. Build one source of truth for product content

Brands managing dozens of European markets can't standardise content they don't control centrally. By storing approved product content in a single system and syndicating it to every marketplace, a single update applies across every listing instead of requiring manual updates across dozens of markets and marketplaces.

2. Structure content for AI agents, not just shoppers

Even brands with clean content still lose recommendations if it's considered incomplete to the AI that's reading it. As Adam Plom, VP of Content at Shoptalk Europe, asked, "How do you market to a bot buying on behalf of a human?" Brands preparing for AI-driven discovery should audit their titles, attributes, and descriptions, and ask whether an agent would recommend the product if a shopper described what they need.

3. Connect content, media, and analytics as one system

Once brands have optimized their content for AI, they can spend media budgets where it will have the greatest impact. That efficiency disappears when content and retail teams work separately, as the brand can overspend on visibility the brand would've already earned organically, or send paid traffic to a page that isn't ready to convert. Agentic retail brings content, media, and analytics together, helping brands direct spend toward the products that need visibility and only once the page can convert.

European brands preparing now will be ready for AI

European brands that optimise their catalogues now will remain visible as AI discovery continues to grow in their markets, and they will already have the necessary foundation when marketplaces start selling that visibility and shopping agents start completing purchases. Brands that wait for the AI rollout before building will spend months catching up instead of competing.

European brands don't have to learn these lessons the hard way; they can watch what succeeds in the markets leading the way. An agentic retail platform like CommerceIQ can help brands turn those lessons into an advantage, before they become a necessity.
